August 1: Conquest Community Update and Celebration
Jack Behm, a Conquest neighbor and friend for decades, recently completed an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Jack is a Vietnam Veteran. Watching his face as he was applauded by hundreds was a moment I will never forget. “This is closure I have waited almost 60 years for,” he quietly said. Jack’s personal welcome included friends, wife Linda, children, grandchildren and his two proud great-grandsons. If you have never experienced an Honor Flight welcome, I encourage you to do so or thank a vet with a letter of gratitude.
Yard sales are springing up all over the countryside! We invite you to come to Conquest Rec Field on Fuller Road on Saturday, June 6 from 9-2. Our Community has gathered clothing, knick-knacks, antiques, appliances and furniture to sell. We have a couple of tables left if you would like to be part of our sale, $10 for a big table under our large pavilion. Call me at 315-776-4726. Proceeds from our table rentals will enhance our Conquest Community Celebration on August 1st! We are lining up food trucks, vendors, Emerson Church baked goods, a Conquest Fire Dept Chicken BBQ, our famous Chuck-A-Duck, displays, games and a tournament or two.
We are just beginning our celebration of USA 250. I was proud to be part of the first Founding Mothers celebration at a Martha Washington Freedom Tea. She was quite a woman! Lady Washington, as she was called (before the term First Lady), carefully monitored her activities so not to be considered ‘royalty’. During the Revolutionary War, she supported the Patriot cause and became a beacon of civility. She helped raise funds to support the soldiers under her husband’s command and sewed shirts, made bandages and nursed the wounded. Thank you to the leadership at Old Mentz Heritage Center for the imagination and energy to host this celebration and the folks who enjoyed the fellowship and cookies!
Amazing Grace Parish has a cadre of musicians who add to our worship experiences. Recently the Coleman Family used their talents, adding a Sunshine Medley as part of our Special Music time. We will be holding our 10 AM worship at Butler United Methodist Church during the month of June, Victory UMC in July and back to Countryside/Conquest in August with our Picnic Church Service on August 2.
We will be celebrating Hazel Gilhully Day on June 30. Hazel contributed to our Fire Department, Church and Community for many years. If you are in the area, please stop by the Town Building during business hours or the small pavilion till 7 or so for some iced tea and cookies in her honor. And also in her honor figure out a way to give back to your community! On August 5th we will be collecting items for UMCOR cleaning and hygiene kits. There will be lists of needed items on the Town of Conquest website and at the Town Office.
